 — A homecoming football game in Heidelberg reportedly turned tragic Friday night when gunfire erupted on the grounds of Heidelberg High School, killing two people and wounding at least one other, according to Police Chief Cornell White.

White told WDAM that one victim was found on the school’s baseball field, while another was discovered in a tailgating area near the bleachers. The suspected shooter or shooters remained at large late Friday.

Emergency vehicles and officers converging on the area as spectators rushed to safety.

The Heidelberg Police Department and the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation are leading the inquiry, with assistance from the Mississippi Highway Patrol, Bay Springs Police Department, and the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office.

Law enforcement officials remained on the scene into early Saturday morning, gathering evidence and helping families affected by the shooting.

Heidelberg Mayor Robert Barnett said the city would fully cooperate with investigators and vowed accountability.

“We will be upholding the law to the fullest because we cannot have things like this happen in Heidelberg,” Barnett told WDAM. “This was an unforeseen incident.”
