The Mississippi Association of Independent Schools has handed down fines, suspensions and probation to Brookhaven Academy and Lamar School following a sideline fight during the Class 4A–Division III championship game, according to minutes released Monday by the MAIS Affairs Committee.
The committee met Dec. 1 to review reports from both schools, hear from administrators and examine video from multiple camera angles before issuing its findings.
Following its review, the committee announced several sanctions:
— A Brookhaven Academy player who was injured and standing on the sideline in a blue shirt has been banned from attending any MAIS athletic events for the remainder of the school year. He will also be ineligible to participate in football jamborees or games until after Brookhaven’s first regular-season game next fall. The committee noted the player made first contact with an opposing athlete as he exited the field and later attempted to incite the crowd.
— Brookhaven coaches Hunter Prytarski and Bubba Keene were each fined $1,000 and barred from attending MAIS athletic events until after the final game of Brookhaven’s 2026 football season. Both coaches must appear before the Athletic Activities Committee to show why they should be allowed to return to coaching. The committee said both men made “aggressive and forceful contact” with an opposing student-athlete.
— Brookhaven Academy was placed on one year of probation and fined $1,500.
— Lamar School was placed on one year of probation and fined $500.
The fight occurred during Friday’s championship matchup between Brookhaven Academy and Lamar School. MAIS officials said the sanctions are intended to reinforce expectations for sportsmanship and conduct across the association.
