Clarke County emergency dispatchers received a 911 call at approximately 4:30 a.m. reporting a structure fire in the 500 block of County Road 211 in the Shubuta area. During the call, it was reported that the homeowner might still be inside the residence, Clarke County Investigator Shane Harper told Clarke County Hot Topics.
Fire departments responding to the scene found the camper trailer fully engulfed in flames upon arrival, Harper said. After the fire was extinguished, the body of a 71-year-old male was recovered from the structure.
The Mississippi State Fire Marshal’s Office is on scene conducting an investigation, which is standard protocol in cases involving fire-related deaths, Harper said. The victim’s body will be transported to the Mississippi State Crime Lab for an autopsy.
Clarke County Coroner David Bonner confirmed to Clarke County Hot Topics that one male victim was recovered from the fire and pronounced deceased. Bonner said the victim’s name has not been released pending further investigation and notification of next of kin.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Additional details will be released as they become available, authorities said.
