NESHOBA COUNTY, Miss. (Queen City Newsfeed) – A student at Neshoba Central Middle School was found with a small handgun in a backpack Friday morning, according to a statement from the Neshoba County School District.
School officials say they received a tip around 7:45 a.m. that a student may have been in possession of a weapon. Staff members quickly located the student and secured the backpack before finding the firearm inside.
District officials said the handgun was never removed from the bag while on campus and that there was no threat of harm to students or staff. Both the student and the weapon were safely removed from the school without incident, and local law enforcement has taken over the investigation.
Superintendent Josh Perkins praised the swift response of school staff and resource officers, adding that student and staff safety remains the district’s top priority.
The district also reminded parents to regularly check their children’s belongings and encouraged students to report any potential safety concerns immediately.
