MERIDIAN, Miss. (Queen City Newsfeed)- One person was allegedly killed in a shooting Thursday morning on the 2900 block of State Boulevard, and a person of interest is in custody, authorities said.
Police received the call around 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 22, 2026. Lauderdale County Coroner Stella McMahan responded to the scene along with the Meridian Police Department and Metro Ambulance Services.
Assistant Police Chief Dareall Thompson confirmed that one person was pronounced dead at the scene. No additional details about the victim or the person in custody were immediately released.
The alleged shooting occurred near a local daycare. The daycare’s owner said all children were safe and that appropriate lockdown procedures were implemented as a precaution.
The investigation remains ongoing, and police said a full report will be released when available.
