MERIDIAN, Miss. (Queen City Newsfeed) – Meridian police have arrested two people in connection with the 2023 death of 8-month-old Xavier Bryant, the department announced Monday.
James Parker Jr. was charged with murder, while Jaquanisha Terrell was charged with felony child abuse. Both were arrested July 16, according to the Meridian Police Department.
Police identified Bryant as Terrell’s son.
Bryant was pronounced dead Feb. 23, 2023, after he was transported to Anderson Regional Medical Center. Meridian police opened an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death in the days that followed.
Detectives requested a forensic autopsy through the Mississippi State Medical Examinations Office. The autopsy determined Bryant died from multiple blunt force trauma and ruled his death a homicide.
During the multiyear investigation, detectives reviewed medical records, conducted numerous interviews and examined forensic evidence. Investigators also worked with the Lauderdale County District Attorney’s Office to ensure the evidence supported criminal prosecution.
Police said additional charges are possible as the investigation continues in coordination with the district attorney’s office.
The department said it would not discuss specific evidence or comment further on matters that could affect the judicial process because the charges are now before the court.
“This case reflects the commitment of the Meridian Police Department to thoroughly investigate every suspicious death regardless of how much time has passed,” Meridian Police Chief Malachi Sanders said. “While some investigations require months or even years to fully develop, our detectives remain committed to following the evidence where it leads. Our thoughts remain with Xavier Bryant’s family, and all of those who have been affected by this tragedy.”
