NEWTON, Miss. (Queen City Newsfeed) — A male was injured in a shooting Tuesday night in Newton, and a juvenile person of interest was taken into custody shortly afterward, according to the Newton Police Department.
Police said Newton County E-911 received a report at approximately 10:20 p.m. on July 28 of a person suffering from a gunshot wound in the area of East First Street Extension and East Drive.
When officers arrived, they found a male victim with a gunshot wound. The victim was transported to a local hospital with what police described as an apparent non-life-threatening injury.
Authorities said officers immediately launched a shooting investigation and identified a person of interest. After information was relayed to Newton County E-911, the Newton County Sheriff’s Department conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle carrying the person of interest and took the individual into custody without incident.
Police said the identity of the person of interest is being withheld because the individual is a juvenile. Additional information is expected to be released once formal charges are filed.
“We are thankful for the quick response from our officers, Newton Fire Department, and AmeriPro EMS to the scene as well as the assistance provided by the Newton County Sheriff Department,” Newton Police Chief McKenzie Patrick said in a statement.
The investigation remains ongoing.
