MERIDIAN, Miss. — The Arts & Community Events Society will host a free, family-friendly Day of the Dead celebration on Friday, Oct. 30, along Fifth Street in downtown Meridian.
The event will run from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and feature live music by Mariachi Moderno Internacional, face painting, local art, food vendors and community altars.
As part of the tradition, community members are invited to create personal altars, or ofrendas, to honor and remember loved ones who have passed. Spaces for individual altars are free to set up during the event, and residents can participate by messaging organizers directly.
Traditional ofrendas serve as personalized memorials decorated with photographs, marigolds, candles, water, favorite foods and meaningful keepsakes to celebrate a person’s life, memories and personality.
